What Is Plasma?

Plasma is the liquid part of your blood. It carries water, antibodies, enzymes and proteins. Drug makers use it to produce therapies for people with immune conditions and clotting disorders, which is why centers pay for it.

Who Is Eligible to Donate?

The general rules are simple. Centers follow the same basic requirements, with small differences by state.

  • Age: 18 to 70.
  • Weight: at least 110 pounds and under 400 pounds.
  • Health: you pass a medical exam and a medical history screening.
  • Testing: your sample tests negative for infectious viruses.

How Much Does Donating Plasma Pay?

  • A normal visit pays $40 to $100. The amount depends on the center, your weight and the promotion running that month.
  • Your first month pays the most. New donor promotions are commonly worth $700 to $1,000 once you finish the required number of donations.
  • Heavier donors earn more. Centers pay by plasma volume, and the FDA weight tiers are 110 to 149 pounds, 150 to 174 pounds and 175 to 400 pounds.
  • Location matters. Centers price against nearby competitors, so the same brand can pay differently two states over.
  • You are paid on a prepaid debit card, usually loaded the same day.

Some centers also run coupons and referral bonuses on top of the base rate, so ask what is available before your first visit.

Highest Paying Plasma Donation Centers

Almost every center runs a new donor promotion worth far more than its ongoing rate. That is where the real money is. Almost none of them publish one national rate, so treat the table below as a range and confirm with your nearest center.

New donor offers change often and are set per location. Treat these as the published national range and confirm with your nearest center.
CenterNew donor offerTypical ongoing payHow you get paidWorth knowing
CSL PlasmaLargest US network Up to $800 first month Varies by weight, location and current promotion Reloadable prepaid card, funded right after you donate Runs a separate returning donor and student offer
BioLifeOwned by Takeda $700 to $1,000 across 8 donations Varies by location Prepaid debit card The offer is coupon based, so pull your center’s coupon before your first visit or you can miss it
Octapharma Plasma Up to $750 in your first 35 days Tiered, and set by weight, height and hematocrit Prepaid card, credited within 24 hours Pays up to $50 per referral, and OctaRewards points unlock after 7 donations
GrifolsIncludes Biomat USA Set per center, tied to finishing a set number of donations within 30 days Varies by location Prepaid card Now also runs the former BPL Plasma and Biotest US centers, so a closed local brand may reopen as Grifols
KEDPLASMAOwned by Kedrion Biopharma Not published nationally Varies by location Prepaid card Smaller footprint, so worth checking only if one is genuinely close to you
ADMA BioCenters Runs a new donor loyalty bonus, amount not published Paid every donation, up to twice a week Cash card credited after each donation Pays more for some specialty collection programs, so ask what you qualify for
ImmunoTekIndependent operator Set per center Varies by location Prepaid card Concentrated in the South and Southeast

Figures come from each company’s own donor pages. Payment is set per location and changes with promotions, so the center 20 minutes further away can be worth the drive.

Before you commit to a center, call and ask three things:

  1. What does the current new donor promotion pay, and how many donations does it take to finish it?
  2. Does the promotion reset if you miss a week?
  3. What does a normal visit pay once the promotion ends? That is the number you live with, and it is the one centers advertise least.

A few names from older lists are gone as standalone brands. BPL Plasma sold its US centers to Grifols, and Biotest‘s US network went the same way. If you remember one of those near you, check whether it now operates as Grifols or Biomat USA.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Bring these three things:

  • A valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license.
  • Proof of your current address, such as a utility bill from the past month.
  • Proof of your Social Security number.

Here is how the visit goes:

  1. Check in and screening. Staff review your documents and medical history. The first visit takes longest.
  2. Quick health check. A finger stick tests your protein and hemoglobin levels.
  3. The donation. Blood is drawn, the plasma is separated and the rest is returned to your body. Plan on about 90 minutes in total, so bring a book or headphones.
  4. Payment. The money is loaded onto your card before you leave.

How Often Can You Donate Plasma?

  • Private centers: up to twice in any 7 day period, with at least a day between donations. This is where the higher pay is.
  • American Red Cross: once every 28 days, and it does not pay.
  • Why the limit exists: the gap gives your body time to replace the plasma.

To feel good on donation days:

  • Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of.
  • Eat a healthy meal first, and skip junk and sugary food.
  • Cut back on coffee, tea and soft drinks.
  • Avoid alcohol in the days before you donate.

What Are the Side Effects?

Donating plasma is generally safe, but it is not effortless money. Know what to expect.

  • Short term: dizziness, nausea, fatigue and dehydration are the most common. Drinking plenty of water helps.
  • At the needle site: bruising is possible, and frequent donors can develop vein scarring.
  • Long term: plasma carries antibodies, so donating very often can lower your antibody levels, which may make it easier to get sick.

If you feel run down, space your donations out. Treat plasma as extra money and not as your main income, and talk to your doctor if you have a health condition.
